The Golden Triangle is one of Asia’s two main opium-producing areas. It is an area of around 950,000 square kilometres that overlaps the mountains of three countries of Southeast Asia: Myanmar, Laos and Thailand.
The area is about an hour’s drive north of Chiang Rai airport.
Depart from Chiangmai in the morning for a short visit to Maekajan Hot spring then continue up north via Wang nau to a small peaceful province “Phayao”. It is an enchanting community with delightful natural beauty and fascinating religious site. Dating back to more than 900 years, it used to be an independent state its own rulers before it become a part of Lanna Thai Kingdom in mid – 14th century. Sight seeing around Kwan Phayao ( Phayao lake ), the largest fresh-water fish habitat in the upper north which provides the livelihood of many of local people. After lunch provided at the local restaurant then proceeding to visit White Temple or Wat Rongkhun ( the one and only the Buddhist temple in Thailand )… Further north via Chiangrai to the ancient city Chiangsaen, the first capital city of Lanna Kingdom, then continue to Golden triangle
Golden triangle compassing parts of Thailand, Laos, Myanmar/Burma, and Yunnan province of China has been well-known as opium producing region in mass media and history text books all over the world. How and when the opium came to this region is much less known or interested. However now peoples can see some insight into the history of opium at the Hall of Opium located on the Thai side of Golden Triangle.
